Bionix 1455 Digital Otoscope for iPhone Overview

The Bionix Oto for Clinicians is the latest innovation in ear examination designed to work with the Apple iPhone. This iPhone Otoscope enables the viewing and capture of high quality, magnified images and videos of the tympanic membrane. The images can then be shared with other medical professionals to collaborate and share ideas, or to use in training. The Oto also encourages interaction between the clinician and patient, allowing for a visual explanation, giving the patient a better understanding of the condition of their ear. The documentation is HIPAA compliant.

The Oto makes explaining to parents a once ‘intangible diagnosis a thing of the past. With its superior digital magnification and image capture, parents can now better appreciate the art of the ear examination.” - Dr. Robert Quillin, Pediatrician

Study: American Journal of Emergency Medicine

Performed at: Department of Emergency Medicine, University of California Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA

Performed by: John R. Richard, MD, Kelsey A. Gaylor, BS and Ashley J. Pilgrim, MD

The objective of this study was to determine whether the CellScope Otoscope improved visualization of the tympanic membrane and diagnosis of acute otitis media, in comparison with a traditional wall-mounted otoscope. Another goal was to determine which device was preferred, by surveying the patients, parents and physicians. Over 50 patients who reported symptoms of ear pain or fever were included in the study and were examined by both resident physicians and attending physicians. They first used the traditional otoscope and then the CellScope Otoscope.

The results showed that the diagnosis achieved using the traditional otoscope was changed a significant number of times after the ear was re-examined with the CellScope Otoscope. Diagnoses of acute otitis media were retracted on several occasions and a number of diagnoses were also changed to acute otitis media. Survey results showed that patients, parents, and physicians all preferred the use of CellScope.

Study: Insights in Neurosurgery Vol. 1 No. 1:4

Performed at: Neurotrauma Clinic

Performed by: Department of Neurosurgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center (UCIMC)

The objective of this study was to determine whether the CellScope or a traditional otoscope is preferred as a teaching tool for students, physician assistants, and residents. Medical professionals including students, assistants, residents and attending physicians were surveyed following the use of both types of otoscopes. They rated their preference of each device on a scale from 1 through 5.

cellscope preference during exam chart

According to the study, the average preference of the CellScope during an examination was 4.7 out of 5 as seen in the graph above. In comparison, the traditional otoscope only resulted in an average preference of 3.16 out of 5. The CellScope comes out ahead as the preferred device to be used during an examination.

cellscope preference for teaching chart

According to the study, the average preference of the CellScope for teaching purposes was 4.7 out of 5. In comparison, the traditional otoscope only resulted in an average preference of 2.78 out of 5. The CellScope comes out ahead as the preferred device to be used for teaching purposes.

Overall, CellScope was preferred for diagnosis of abnormalities. Out of 27 patients, six undiagnosed abnormalities were found after following up examination by the traditional otoscope with the CellScope. This shows that using the iPhone attachment can lead to a more accurate diagnosis due to better visual clarity during exams.
